Your physician may order a 24 hour or 48 hour Holter monitor to be worn at home. A Holter monitor can be worn during the patient's regular daily activities and records the heart activity. Since the recording covers a greater period of time than a regular EKG, the recording is more likely to detect an abnormal heart rhythm if present. It can also evaluate the patient's cardiac activity during episodes of chest pain, during which time there may be changes indicative of ischemia, or reduced blood supply to the muscles of the heart.

The Holter monitoring is performed by attaching sticky EKG electrodes to the patient's chest. Thin wires connect the EKG electrodes to a small tape recorder. The device is small and can be worn under your clothing unnoticed. The heart's activity is then recorded and analyzed for the specified time period. The physician can then evaluate the recording to correlate any symptoms of chest pain, dizziness or black outs.
